Toyota's Japanese-market head units look similar and behave similarly, but under the menu skin they are distinct products with distinct firmware. Choosing the wrong model in a calculator produces a wrong code — so knowing what separates the five common units matters.

The letter prefix encodes the line (NS = audio/navigation family, Z = navigation tier, C/L = compact lines), and the suffix (T) marks the touch-screen variants. All five share the same fundamental anti-theft concept: an 8-digit code calculated from the unit's 16-digit ERC serial.
Where the firmware differs
Locking behaviour
All 68-series units trigger on total power loss, but the entry route to the service screen varies slightly by model. NSZT touch units respond to the hold-power-plus-parking-light sequence; NSZN navigation units can require an additional confirmation step. The serial format, however, is identical across the family.
Menus and service screens
Navigation-tier units (NSZN-Z68T, NSZT-Y68T with nav) expose more service pages — map data, GPS status, region settings — while compact units (NSCN-W68, NSLN-W68) keep a minimal set. On every variant, the screen you need is labelled with the 16-digit serial and the model name.
Code calculation
Each model family applies its own key schedule to the serial. A code computed as if for an NSZT-W68T will not unlock an NSCN-W68T with the same serial prefix — which is why the calculator asks for the exact model. The five supported families are: W68T, Y68T, Z68T, W68 (compact) and LN-W68.
How to identify your exact unit
- Open the ERC service screen (hold main button + parking lights ×3–4).
- Read the model name printed beside the 16-digit serial.
- Select that exact model in the calculator — never guess from the car model alone, because importers sometimes swap units between vehicles.
What this means for compatibility
If your radio was replaced or swapped before you bought the car, the unit inside may not match the factory spec for that model. Trust the label on the service screen over the vehicle's identity — the pairing that matters is serial ↔ unit model, and the code follows from that pair alone.
